Presented by Lois Hansen, Sunday, April 24, 2005
Alan and I moved cross-country five times in the first eight years we were married—and had babies in Chicago; Bloomfield New Jersey; Minneapolis; and Omaha. On our first move, to Cleveland, Ohio, we found a Unitarian Church, which we recognized on our first Sunday morning as a home for values that reflected our own. I remember my surprise, however, when I realized a couple of moves later that I would never willingly move to any community where there was no Unitarian or Universalist Church.
Now we have been members of this church for 39 years, and this particular Unitarian congregation is an integral part of our lives. About fifteen years ago when we made a new will, we acknowledged the importance to us of this religious community by including the Lincoln Church in our will.
For more than 100 years this congregation has been a voice for religious freedom, social justice, and the democratic process in Lincoln, as well as a caring community, uniting reason and spiritual growth for its members and friends. The Unitarian Church of Lincoln was here for every one of us on the day we first wanted or needed it because people we never knew built for us. The Lincoln Unitarian Foundation is our way to pass this gift to others who follow us. Given our thoughtful support, the Lincoln Unitarian Foundation will help to insure a lively and relevant place for spiritual exploration to our children and grandchildren.
When you allocate your resources, I hope you will consider the value of Unitarian Universalist religious purposes and principles to yourself and your family, and to the people of Lincoln in the 21st century.
