Childhood home of Dorothy McGuire demolished in Omaha
The childhood home of actress Dorothy McGuire at 602 S. 38th Ave in Omaha was demolished on August 6 to make way for a 60 unit student housing complex for the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The home has been owned by the medical center for about 30 years. The med center had been renting it out to students.

Restoration of the house would have been too expensive, according to the med center. A memorial to McGuire will be created at the site, using bricks from the house. Two oak trees in the front yard will remain.

McGuire was born in Omaha in 1918. She began her acting career at the Omaha Community Playhouse, starring with another Nebraska native, Henry Fonda. She was a graduate of Omaha's Central High School.

She made her film debut in Claudia in 1943. Among her film credits are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), The Spiral Staircase (1946), Gentlemen's Agreement (1947), Three Coins in a Fountain (1954), A Summer Place (1959), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), and Summer Magic (1963). In 1976, she played Mary Jordache in the television miniseries, Rich Man, Poor Man, which also starred another Omaha native, Nick Nolte.

Miss McGuire died on September 13, 2001 at the age of 85.

Sean Penn returns to Omaha for film role

Sean Penn
Sean Penn

Sean Penn, who made his directorial debut in 1991's The Indian Runner (filmed in Omaha) returned to the city in July to film scenes for his upcoming movie, The Assassination of Richard Nixon. No doubt that one of the film's executive producers, Alexander Payne, had something to do with the decision to film in Omaha.
Among the locations that were scouted for the film were Eppley Airfield, a drugstore, an exotic dance club, a hardware store and Caniglia's restaurant. The Omaha locations will portray an eastern U.S. city in the film. Filming locations were closed to the public.
