Carson got his start in broadcasting in Omaha,
working at
KFAB radio and WOW television (now
WOWT).
On October 1, 1949, Carson married his college sweetheart,
Joan "Jody" Morrill Wolcott. The couple had three sons, Christopher, born
in 1950; Richard (Ricky), born in 1952; and Cory, born in 1953. Richard died
in a car accident in 1991. The couple divorced in 1963.
In 1950, Carson left Omaha for his future in California
where he got a job as staff announcer at KNXT (now
KCBS-TV)
in Los Angeles. It was at this station where he hosted Carson's Cellar,
which ran until 1953. Carson wrote for Red Skelton's television show for a
while. One night Skelton suffered a concussion just before air time and
Carson went on in Skelton's place and opened the show with a monologue.
Carson moved up to the big leagues, hosting his own
network show, Earn Your Vacation on CBS. Carson appeared on
CBS until 1956. In 1957 he began hosting Who Do You Trust?, a
daytime game show on ABC. It was during the run of this show that Carson
began a long time collaboration with announcer Ed McMahon, who became
Carson's sidekick throughout his career.
Carson filled in for Jack Paar on NBC's The Tonight
Show and became the show's host on October 1, 1962.
Carson's numerous marriages often provided material for
his monologue and one-liners. He was married to Joanne Copeland from 1963 -
1972; to Joanna Holland from 1972 - 1983. Carson married his fourth wife,
Alexis Maas in 1987. The couple remained married until Carson's death in
2005.
Among his many honors are six Emmy Awards, the Governors'
Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Presidential
Medal of Freedom, the American Comedy Lifetime Achievement Award and the
Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award.
