Samuel Fife Jr. was born in Columbiana County Ohio January 9th 1831, and died in his home in St. Charles Iowa, Sunday night, June 10, 1917, aged 86 years, 5 months, and 1 day.
He came to Madison County Iowa, in the month of December 1848. Here he met and wedded Francis A. White, May 6 1855. Twelve children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy and one son David, died 6 years ago.
The living children are, Mrs. Anna Swearingen, and Mrs. Elizabeth Kale of Turo Ia. Mrs. Alice Kale of Kingfisher Oklahoma; Mrs. Emma Downs of Corning Missouri; Sherman of Los Angeles, Califorina; Minnie and Mrs. Nora Bumbarger of St. Charles Ia. Homer of Omaha Nebraska, and Mrs Della Thompson of Lorimor Ia.
He enlisted in Company F; 39th Iowa infantry,August 17, 1862. He was in the army of the Tennessee under command of W.T. Sherman. He engaged in the Atlanta Campaign, commencing May 1, 1864 and ending October 7th; took part in Shermans' great march to the sea and was present at the surrender of Joseph E. Johnson April 26, 1865. He was also at, and took part in the Grand Review at Washington D.C. May 24, 1865. He was discharged June 6, 1865, and arrived home June 15, 1865.
He united with the church early in life and for a number of years, and at the time of his death, was a member of the Church of Christ of St. Charles. He was reckoned among the most faithful of the church and unless hindered by sickness or otherwise, was always found at his post of duty. He will be greatly missed by the church and the many warm friends he had gathered around him in his earthly pilgrimage. He had made all preperations for his funeral and the church was uppermost in thought and a great comfort to him.
He leaves nine children, thirty-one grand children, eighteen great grand children, and a wide circle of friends to morn his departure.
Funeral services were conducted from the Church of Christ of St. Charles, Wenesday June 13th, at 10.30 A.M.. Rev. S. Isacc Elden, of Creston, former pastor of the church officiating. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to their last resting place and many were the beautiful floral designs, expressive of the high esteem in which he was held by the G.A.R., W.R.C. and the Sons of Veterans.
