Watty-Caudill Cemetery
Letcher County, Kentucky
On August 19, 2006, I was able to spend about 6 hours in Letcher County, Kentucky. I was in Tennessee on business and could only take one day of personal time to drive up to Letcher and visit the library and a couple of cemeteries, searching for some of the haunts of my Brown ancestors. Six hours was not enough time for much...actually, six days would not have been enough! But at least I got to take a few pictures at Watty-Caudill Cemetery, and it was a great pleasure just being there for a time.

Below are some small photos of the cemetery and the headstones of John Q. Brown and his wife Elizabeth Caudill, her father and mother, Stephen and Sarah Adams Caudill, Stephen and Easter Caudill Brown, and a few others. If anyone is interested in the full-sized, high resolution images, please let me know.

Does anyone know where Ben Brown, son of John Q., is buried??

Gregory Brown (Valentine, John Q., Ben, Elihu, Cleveland, Thomas, Gregory)

John Q. Brown has three headstones; the original hand-carved stone (mossy stone left center), a new stone placed by the Letcher County Historical Society, and a stone commemorating his War of 1812 service. All three stones can be seen the this photo.
This is John Q. Brown's original hand-carved headstone. The original inscription can still be read.
A still closer photo of John Q.'s original headstone.
And finally, John Q.'s War of 1812 headstone.

Two views of Watty Caudill Cemetery. Although currently overgrown, many of the original headstones are still legible, and thanks to the Letcher County Historical Society and the Pine Mountain Chapter of the DAR, several new headstones have been placed to preserve the information from the originals.
