LINCOLN HOME SCHOOL SENIOR STRING ORCHESTRA

 

       

Welcome to the Lincoln Home School Senior String Orchestra!

 

The Lincoln Home School Senior String Orchestra is a high-school-level string orchestra for Lincoln area home schoolers.  The orchestra strives for a high standard of performance of music from the baroque era through to the present day.  The orchestra currently has almost 30 players.  The orchestra is conducted by Leonardo Lebas, associate conductor of the University of Nebraska Symphony Orchestra.  Click on the links below for more information.  Be sure to listen to some of the many sound files of the orchestra playing!

 

The orchestra rehearses and performs in the sanctuary of Faith Bible Church.  Faith Bible Church is located at 6201 S. 84th St. Lincoln (just S. of Old Cheney Rd. and Lincoln Christian School)

·        KICKOFF! – Monday August 25th, 2008, 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. – Orchestras kickoff and parent’s meeting at Faith Bible Church

·        Monday, September 8th, 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. – weekly rehearsals start at Faith Bible Church (NOTE TIME CHANGE!)

·        Monday December 8th, 7:00 p.m. – Orchestras December Concert at Faith Bible Church.

April 2008 Concert

 

This concert, the first under new conductor Leonardo Lebas featured Ralph Vaughan Williams beautiful Prelude on Rhosymedre, Sir Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, Op. 20, and ended with Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto in C major for two flutes (RV 533) with homeschool soloists Christiana and Elisabeth Wismer (flutes), Natalie Anderson (violoncello), and Helen Dowd (harpsichord). The orchestra was excited to have Maestro Ed Polochick of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra guest conduct a rehearsal this season!  Click on the links below to hear MP3 files of the orchestra playing:

Sunday December 9th, 2007 Concert

 

This concert, the last conducted by Martin Gaskell, included Gustav Holst’s Brook Green suite, the world premiere of Reflections, a very beautiful, rich, spacious, and evocative new composition by local homeschooled high school composer Aaron Kessler, music from Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, and Giuseppe Torelli’s Christmas Concerto.  The concert ended with another chance for the audience to sing along with the orchestra in the triumphant Hallelujah Chorus from George Frideric Handel’s Messiah.  Concert mistress Breanna Thornton was the soloist in Reflections, and the Torelli Christmas Concerto featured many soloists from the orchestra. May 6, 2007 Concert

The Senior Orchestra part of the May 2007 program included W. A. Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky’s Sonata for Trumpet and Organ (with solo trumpet Mike Smith and organist Pam Penner), and world premieres of Evening Twilight by homeschool high-school composer Evan Winter’s (who conducted the premiere), and orchestra conductor Martin Gaskell’s Fantasia for Harp and Orchestra (with harpist Heidi Huenefeld)

December 10, 2006 Concert

 

 

The concert featured Antonio Vivaldi’s Autumn concerto with our concert mistress homeschool violin soloist Breanna Thornton, Arcangelo Corelli’s Christmas Concerto featuring soloists from the orchestra, J. S. Bach’s Air from his 3rd Orchestral Suite, and his famous choral setting of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring with trombonist Brenda Ealey.  The concert ended with an audience sing-along of the Hallelujah chorus from Handel’s Messiah accompanied by the orchestra.
